The IT Flower - new whitepaper

The IT Flower looks at only two things:

  1. Types of work
  2. How that work gets done

This framework can be used to quickly categorize all the recent developments in software, including SaaS, Web 2.0, Enterprise 2.0 tools such as blogs and wikis, web versions of MS Office and new trend towards open APIs and SOA.

The framework can also be used to identify new opportunities for massive new types of markets. I’ll be posting the entire white paper as a blog post. However, in the mean time, here is a draft version in pdf format.

Here’s what the final diagram looks like:

Thanks for this insightful and helpful model! I wrote about it on my blog and asked a few questions. To mention them:
    1. What are examples of the “process tools”? The whitepaper says that Teqlo also fits in this area. But they aren’t the only one, right?
The IT flower not only talks about structured to unstructured work, but there’s also a “how work gets done” axis. Does this imply that I’m in the wrong area of the framework when I’m looking at “process tools” (because that’s not where the work gets done)?

Anyway, this framework is interesting and helpful. And gives food for thought. It gives a framework on how people work and the complexity of work processes and environments. The key for the tools vendors will be to allow users to switch easily between tools that support the different types of work. This will truly help workers “get work done”!
